Passage Farm Campsite Arlingham Gloucestershire

Last weekend (from 30th September 2022) we had an amazing 3 night stay (Friday to Monday) at Passage Farm campsite which is located in the village of Arlingham in Gloucestershire. The one acre campsite, based on a working farm, is located on the picturesque horseshoe bend of the River Severn, Gloucester.

We spent our time with Helen and Karl from Youtube’s Roaming In Raymond who met us there at the campsite on the Friday evening.

The campsite field that we used was a large grass field, which was flat and the grass well kept. There were a few tame friendly farm chickens roaming around the field, on the look out for food, apparently they see the caravans and motorhomes as their meal ticket, but you are not supposed to feed them according to what we read.

Motorhomes

There was a second campsite field, which was also being used by motorhomers and caravanners. I believe that one was affiliated to The Caravan Club.

The campsite fields both have a centrally located toilet block, but no showers. The toilets were clean and tidy.

There was a nice fishing lake on the site, which we visited a few times during our stay. Whilst not sign posted when we visited, there is a rickety wooden gate half way around the lake, and as we learnt you are not supposed to go past this point, as it leads to the back garden of the owners’ house.

Helen treated us to a comedy gold moment when she showed us the way NOT to remove and reinstall a motorhome toilet cassette, which can be seen in our Youtube video.

A short walk, about a mile away down the lane is The Old Passage Inn a lovely pub, right on the river Severn curve, and which has numerous picnic tables outside. We took advantage of drinks and ice-creams whilst sitting outside and taking in the scenery it offered.

There are 4 nice walks in the immediate area, of which we did two; the Hare and Salmon walks.

The walks are flat for the most part, and the two we did took us around the bank of the river, where there is plenty to see across the river, including nice landscape scenery, vessels, boatyards and old buildings.

Saturday lunchtime came and we headed to The Red Lion pub in Arlingham. It is a pub owned by the local villagers, who bought the pub in 2013 when it was going to auction and they were afraid they would lose their village pub, which has its history back to 1782. Within 24 hours they raised the money to purchase the pub, which now has 100 shareholders. It is a lovely pub, nicely decorated inside.

The food was nice and the service excellent. They were able to cater for our 4-person party, which required both vegetarian food and food that conformed to gluten free health standards, for someone with a Coeliac diet.

We did return the next day for Sunday lunch, but the pub was too busy and based on the comments from the sever, who seemed a little stressed, we were not really confident the Chef would be able to maintain a level of care that is needed to ensure complete compliance for a Coeliac serving. So, as a precaution we decided to just have drinks and would miss the food that day.

During our walks we called into the grounds of St. Mary the Virgin church Arlington. The Church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the mid-fourteenth century in the decorated style and has been little altered. It still has some of the original stained glass windows. It is maintained in immaculate condition with a large number of loyal and hardworking parishioners cleaning, polishing and decorating it with flowers. It’s certainly worth popping in if you are in the area.

As we missed our Sunday pub lunch, it was now time to head back to the campsite where we (or at least Samantha and Karl) would rustle up a lovely meal for us all, which we ate outside the motorhomes.

Samantha made some lovely Quiches, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and Karl worked his secret recipe magic and showed us how he has managed to cook really tasty crispy potato chunks in the air fryer. All helped down with copious amounts of obligatory Rose wine, Lager and Cider.

At 11.00am on Monday the time came when we needed to leave the campsite, we all had a lovely time in Arlington. So, Helen suggested we all head to Evesham for the final day, which is generally on the way home for us all.

We had a lovely walk around Evesham town, and along the river side. As we do so well, we found a good place to sit and have a good talk about what the next trip away should look like for us all, which we have since firmed up on that planning.

Lunch time came, and we headed to Orto Lounge Cafe Bar in Evesham town. They had what can only be described as a superb Coeliac menu on offer, and we quickly decided this was to be the place we would all eat. We were not disappointed, the food was truly tasty and plentiful. In fact, it was that good we decided it would be rude to leave without having a pudding each too!

The final hours were fast approaching, and so we headed back to the motorhomes that were parked in a large car park. We made a cuppa in the motorhome and took them to drink on the park picnic tables.

As ever we all had a good chat, and then enjoyed the comedy of a person being told off by Karl, and then Helen for allowing her dog to run wild off the lead, which kept coming up to their dog Nookie, who was actually on a lead. I must say though, I did like the free running Springer cross dog, she was a mad little thing, with her tongue hanging out the side of her mouth. I think she ought to have handed her dog over to me to take home lol.
