Are Adder Snakes Harmful?

Adder snakes (Vipera berus) are the only venomous snake species found in the UK. While they are not usually aggressive, they can bite in self-defence when threatened, and their venom can be dangerous to both humans and animals.

Bites To Dogs

In dogs, Adder bites are most commonly seen on the face or legs, and symptoms can include swelling, pain, lethargy, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, an Adder bite can cause a dog’s blood pressure to drop dangerously low, leading to shock and even death.

Adders are most commonly found in heathlands, moors, and woodlands throughout the UK. In particular, they are prevalent in areas with rough, open ground and low vegetation, as well as places where rodents and other small mammals are abundant, which they prey upon.

If you are walking your dog in an area where Adders are known to live, it’s important to keep your dog on a lead and under close supervision. If your dog is bitten by an Adder, seek veterinary attention immediately. In most cases, with prompt treatment, dogs can make a full recovery from an Adder bite.

Bites To Humans

If you are bitten by an Adder, you should try to remain calm and still, as movement can increase the spread of venom throughout the body. Remove any tight clothing or jewellery around the affected area, and keep the bitten limb elevated to reduce swelling. Do not attempt to suck out the venom or make any incisions around the bite, as these methods are ineffective and can cause further harm.

Seek medical attention immediately, as the venom can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the amount of venom injected and the location of the bite.

In most cases, treatment for an Adder bite will involve the administration of antivenom, which can neutralise the venom and prevent further damage. Other treatments may include pain relief medication, intravenous fluids, and monitoring for signs of an allergic reaction. With prompt and appropriate treatment, most people who are bitten by Adders make a full recovery.
