Roof skylights are a great addition to motorhomes, allowing natural light to enter and making the space feel more open and airy. However, over time, the seal around the skylight may deteriorate, leading to leaks and water damage. If you’ve noticed water seeping through your skylight, it’s time to reseal it.
Please note: A more effective repair would involve removing the skylight, but as a temporary measure, here are the steps to follow, without removing the old skylight unit:
Step 1: Clean the Area
Before you begin, make sure the area around the skylight is clean and dry. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any debris, such as leaves or dirt, and then wipe the area with a clean cloth. You want to make sure the area is free of any contaminants that could compromise the new sealant.
Step 2: Remove the Old Sealant
Next, use a putty knife or scraper to remove the old sealant around the skylight. Be gentle to avoid damaging the roof or skylight, but make sure you remove all the old sealant. You may also need to use a solvent to help soften the old sealant and make it easier to remove.
Step 3: Apply New Sealant
Once you’ve removed all the old sealant, it’s time to apply the new sealant. You can use Sikaflex 522, which is a popular choice for skylights. Apply a continuous bead of Sikaflex 522 around the skylight, making sure it’s evenly distributed and covers the entire perimeter of the skylight.
Step 4: Smooth Out the Sikaflex 522
After you’ve applied the Sikaflex, use a plastic scraper or your finger to smooth out the sealant and remove any air pockets or gaps. You want to make sure the sealant is flush with the roof and skylight, and that there are no bumps or ridges that could trap water.
Step 5: Allow the Sealant to Cure
Finally, allow the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
